Empowering Voices: Celebrating World Voice Day April 16, 2025

April 16th marks World Voice Day, a global initiative that shines a spotlight on the importance of vocal health. This year’s theme, "Empower Your Voice," reminds us how vital our voices are for connection, identity, and daily communication.

Why Vocal Health Matters

Our voices are often our first tool of communication—yet they're vulnerable to strain, misuse, and injury. Many people don’t realize the stress placed on the vocal cords through daily use, especially in vocally demanding professions like teaching, public speaking, or singing. Whether you're speaking in meetings or reading bedtime stories, your voice deserves care. At Back 2 You Speech Language Pathology, we offer a wide range of evidence-based services to promote and protect vocal wellness:

Chronic Cough and the Voice: What You Should Know

One commonly overlooked voice issue is chronic cough. If you’ve been coughing for more than 8 weeks without a clear medical explanation, it may be more than just a lingering cold or allergy.

Chronic cough can:

  • Irritate and damage the vocal cords.

  • Lead to voice changes, hoarseness, or pain while speaking.

  • Be caused or worsened by laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), vocal overuse, or post-viral irritation.

We work closely with ENT specialists to identify and treat underlying causes of chronic cough. Once medically cleared, our voice therapy can help retrain the body to suppress the cough reflex and reduce vocal cord strain.

Everyday Tips to Keep Your Voice Strong

  • 💧 Hydrate! Aim for 6–8 glasses of water per day.

  • 😌 Rest Your Voice—especially after heavy use.

  • 🗣️ Avoid Whispering, which strains the vocal cords more than speaking.

  • 🚫 Cut Back on Cough Drops with Menthol, which can dry out your throat.

  • 📞 Don’t Push Through Hoarseness—that’s your body asking for rest.

  • 👩‍⚕️ See a Speech-Language Pathologist if symptoms persist more than 2 weeks.

Let’s Celebrate Your Voice

World Voice Day is a chance to pause and reflect on what your voice makes possible—from your morning hellos to heartfelt conversations. At Back 2 You SLP, we’re honored to support that voice every step of the way.
